Rev. James J. Fleming, S.J. Ph.D. was appointed Vice President of Mission Integration and Executive Director of the Conference and Renewal Center at Campion Center in Weston, Massachusetts on June 1, 2018.
Prior to his return to New England, this Massachusetts native served as the 10th President and Chief Executive Officer of Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU), in Wheeling West Virginia. Preceding his role as president, Fleming was the university’s Vice President for Mission and Identity.
Before joining the leadership team at WJU, Fleming worked at Boston College for ten years as a faculty member in the Lynch School of Education and as Director of Mission Assessment and Planning in the Office of Mission and Ministry, where he led a national research project related to the spiritual development of college students through the design, administration, and analysis of the Boston College Questionnaire about the Undergraduate Experience (BCQ). At Boston College, he served as retreat director in the Kairos and Halftime retreat programs and offered individually directed retreats to faculty and administrators.
He holds a Masters in Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University with a focus in scripture and spirituality where he took part in two summer training programs in spiritual direction. In 1998, Fleming worked as a retreat director at St Bueno’s Jesuit Spirituality Center in Denbigshire, Wales, UK.
Fleming has served as a lecturer at the University of San Francisco (USF), as the Director of the USF Academy: a university-school-community partnership, and as an instructor of Urban Education at Santa Clara University. He is a frequent presenter at national education conferences, is the author of numerous articles and publications, and holds a Ph.D. in educational policy, organization, measurement, and evaluation from the University of California, Berkeley.
Along with his full-time ministry at Campion Center, Fleming is a member of the National Board of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps and a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA.
